Teignmouth Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1924

Teignmouth Golf Club is set a couple of miles back from the coast on moorland at 800 feet above sea level. The layout commands spectacular views of the English Channel, River Teign estuary, and surrounding moors ... near and far. The par-5 1st tee serves-up the best vista of them all, even if its fairway disappears "somewhere over there!"

Teignmouth's 18 holes of excellently presented moorland cum heathland golf, were designed by the legendary Dr Alister MacKenzie. The layout can get a bit compact at times as it rolls across the open heathery terrain. Stylishly mounded and bunkered around the greens, the layout presents an excellent test for players of all abilities.

The six par-3s are evenly split between the two nine-hole loops. Whereas the front-nine contains pleasantly solid heathland holes, the back-nine boasts the better sea views, and more characterful holes. Greater undulations are found on the second half, complemented by some old quarry workings, which certainly play their part! There are no fewer than 11 two-tier MacKenzie-trademark greens, which will thoroughly probe your skills with the short stick.

Pick of the holes: the three back-nine par 3s include two where former quarry workings had a big impact on shaping these testing "short" holes. Meanwhile the long par-3 18th, weighing-in at well over 220 yards, will test the best. A mention also for the par-3 7th, aptly named "Three Tors", with Rippon Tor, Saddle Tor and Hay Tor all in view as you look inland towards Dartmoor.

Did you know?

The nearby town of Teignmouth originally developed as a fishing port. As the 19th century progressed, and the fishing industry declined, the town became more and more popular as a fashionable holiday resort. In addition to its long seaside promenade and the pier, the town is home to many interesting features, not least the River Teign estuary and the Shaldon Bridge, which crosses it.
