Players Club (Stranahan)
The Players Club (Stranahan course): at the relatively inexpensive, busy and popular Players Club, the par-68 Stranahan course complements its larger, longer and more challenging sibling, the Codrington. Most of the original Championship course at The Players (in fact 15 of the original 18 holes) were subsumed into the Codrington layout in 2010. At the same time designer Adrian Stiff was commissioned to add a second 18-holes, the 5,300-yard Stranahan course.
The relatively compact Stranahan occupies gently undulating and relatively open terrain, where shouts of "fore!" frequently ring out. Several tees and greens sit in close proximity to each other, while some fairways (as at 3, 4 & 14, and 10, 12 & 13) run parallel, without too much space between them. The greens themselves are not as large as on the Codrington course, but are also imbued with mercurial slopes and run-offs.
Although relatively open, the occasional presence of gorse bushes, proximity of older woodland and pleasing views onto partly wooded rural countryside, gives the course a pleasantly mature feel beyond its actual years.
The opening island-green par-3, weighing-in at just over 100 yards, is followed by six more par-3s, half of them also rather short. As on the Codrington, some of driving lines from the tee are not as clear as you'd like them to be; marker posts provide a useful guide on a first outing.
Pick of the holes: our favourite by some margin is the gently left-to-right doglegging par-4 7th. Although absent from many holes, it's here that your approach to the green is accompanied by two good size stylish bunkers.

Excellent
It is still possible at certain times and upon application, to play the original Championship course at The Players Club. Built with top-level tournament golf in mind, the Championship course stretches to 7,617 yards from the tips. The layout comprises 15 holes that are now part of the Codrington course, as well as one from the Stranahan course (the 17th, which was the original Championship's 2nd hole), and two retained holes from the original layout (old 3rd and the current 7th & 8th combined).
