Thurlestone Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1897

Thurlestone Golf Club: There are few finer examples of clifftop golf courses in England than here at Thurlestone. It's a layout, one of very few, that delivers uninterrupted sea views from just about every hole.

The stunning clifftop scenery includes views over sandy coves, rocky headlands, Bigbury Bay, the English Channel, enchanting Burgh island and inland to the neat houses and villas of Thurlestone. But these wonderful vistas often come at a price, which can be measured in the m.p.h. of the almost ever-present sea breezes. In winter, they can blow at gale force!

The very open, pleasantly undulating terrain is home to occasional stone walls and gorse bushes, but don't expect to find any trees lining the good-width fairways. Many holes on the course bring you as close to the sea as the cliffs allow. The view from the 11th green and 12th tee, looking straight down onto Burgh Island and inland along the winding River Avon is one the best - but when it comes to panoramas, you are spoilt for choice.

Creating definition to the holes in such an open layout is never easy, but the stone walls, occasional gorse and grassy rough all ensure you have a clear idea of the line for tee and approach shots. Marker posts will also help you on a few holes where blind drives are needed, but for most of the time this very well-designed course gives you a good look at the challenges ahead.

Did you know?

Burgh Island, which can be seen from Thurlestone golf course is a small tidal island, near to the seaside village of Bigbury-on-Sea. The island, which is only 200 yards from the shore, can be accessed at low tide on foot. At high tide, a Sea Tractor is operated by the hotel providing a passenger ferry service to the island. The island is home to only two buildings: the Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel, and a public house, The Pilchard Inn. Many celebrities, politicians and film crews (TV and film) have visited Burgh Island and stayed at the hotel.

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
