Tyrrells Wood Golf Club: with its sweeping views of the golf course and picturesque Surrey Downs beyond, a palatial red-brick clubhouse befits this classy Surrey golf club. So too its excellently maintained, stylish course. Sitting on an easy-draining chalk-base, this parkland-downland course largely retains its original design, for which we can thank two legends of golf course architecture ... James Braid and Harry Colt.
Although a bit compact in places, the layout is full of character. Ever-undulating and always testing and probing, here you'll find a wonderful variety of holes. Within the two characterful nine-hole loops, are some enjoyably elevated teeing grounds, as well as a few blind shots to be made. At 6, 7, 12 and 13, you'll need to cope with tricky side-sloping fairways, while the 7th and 13th tees offer longer-range "Surrey Hills" views.
The lightly tree-lined layout continually probes your game. Although accurate shot-making is often required, many holes encourage a less intimidating larrup from the tee. The opening trio are all short par-4s, with six more relative "shorties" to follow. Leading away from the resplendent clubhouse, are two of the short par-4s. The 1st is downhill and blind, the 2nd uphill and also blind.
Several holes are attractively bunkered around their respective greens, while fairway bunkering also adds character on many occasions. There's no shortage of greens, some of them two-tier, perched above the fairways, making approach play all the more testing.
Pick of the holes: with great variety throughout, a possible flag-bearer for Tyrrells Wood is the downhill par-4 14th. This attractive straightaway hole plays down from a nicely elevated tee, to a stylishly bunker-defended fairway and green.

Tyrrells Wood GC boasts a rich history dating back to the late-19th century. The Grade II listed clubhouse, originally designed as a family residence by the Cunliffe family (of nearby Headley Court), was commissioned around 1880. Set high on a hill, the clubhouse offers lovely views across the opening and closing holes, as well as the Mole Valley, Ranmore Common, and Surrey's wooded hills.
Sitting alongside Tyrrells Wood GC, but remaining largely out of view, is the much newer and exclusive Beaverbrook golf course, and onsite luxury hotel. Beaverbrook sits in the grounds of Cherkley Court, which was the former home of newspaper magnate Max Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook.
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
