Woodcote Park Golf Club: another in a seemingly inexhaustible supply of excellent quality parkland golf courses that surround the metropolis of London. Harry Colt, James Braid and J.H. Taylor were responsible for the design of many of them; this one is by another "Golden Age" designer, Harry Vardon.
The opening five holes and closing three are played in an attractive though flattish parkland area, with the fairways separated by a not overly dense tree-line ... a classic parkland scene, with very little deep rough to worry about. As you cross the bridleway to the par-4 6th, the holes flow out and back in pairs. There's a gentle descent as you play holes 6 thru' 10, and then an equally gentle ascent as holes 11 thru' 15 bring you back again.
Throughout, the layout quietly flows along good-width fairways, with nothing by way of water hazards to worry about. A formidable array of large eliptical cross-bunkers come into play at holes 2, 5, 8, 10, 11 and 18, while a few holes (like 16 and 17) could perhaps benefit from more sand features and/or mounding.
This out-and-back design comprises an "inner" front-nine, wrapped around which is the "outer" back-nine. There's not much to see beyond the course, but much mature woodland to admire both on the course and around the perimeter. The generally large, subtly-sloping, sometimes tilting greens will thoroughly test your skills with the short stick.
Pick of the holes: furthest out from the clubhouse is an attractive stretch of holes comprising the short par-4 11th and 12th holes, and the only back-nine par-3, the good-length 13th.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and Sunday afternoons.

Woodcote Park Golf Club should not be confused with either of the two golf courses at the Royal Automobile Club, which also goes under the name of Woodcote Park. The RAC facility is located 10 miles west of Woodcote Park GC; the two are quite separate entities and not related in any way ... other than by name!
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
