York Golf Club

Unrated: Well regarded course not yet visited by the Where2Golf team.

Est. 1890

York Golf Club is situated in the Vale of York, five miles northeast of the wonderful and historic eponymous city. Here, alongside Strensall Common, you will find a serene blend of parkland and heathland golf, wrapped-up in one of North Yorkshire's top rated layouts ( ... other North Yorks notables include Ganton, Fulford, Pannal, Harrogate and Cleveland).

This easy-walking lowland heath-style layout, will challenge your game from start to finish. The excellent closing stretch includes tough doglegging par-4s at 16 and 18. Between them sits an attractive long par-3 at 17, which requires an excellent tee shot to a narrow, heavily bunker-defended green.

Pick of the holes: the 7th is known as York's signature hole, an intimidating par-3 over water, with trouble on both sides and a wickedly sloping green.

Did you know?

The original York golf course was located in Knavesmire, in and around York Racecourse (horse racing). In 1904 the golf club moved to its present site alongside Strensall Common (at the time a military camp). This heathland nature reserve supports a wealth of wet and dry heath, mire (muddy wetland), open water, woodland and acid grassland. Over 150 plant species flourish on the heath.

In the nearby city of York, you will find stunning York Minster, as well as many other impressive historic buildings. This Anglican cathedral is the seat of the archbishop of York, the second-highest office holder in the Church of England. The minster was mainly constructed between 1220 and the early-1400s, although the first record of a church on this site dates back to 627 A.D.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
