Deauville
Golf Barrière Deauville opened in 1929 as a luxury golf resort on the heights of Mont-Canisy a few minutes from the centre of Deauville. Leading course architect of the day Tom Simpson laid out the original course, which was subsequently revamped in the early-1960s by Sir Henry Cotton. Of the 27 holes available here, the best 18-hole combination uses the Red-nine together with the most scenic of the three, the White nine. The enjoyable Blue-nine makes up the trio.
The three courses fit well together, with good width fairways, fearsome greenside bunkering, no water in play and lightly tree-lined fairways giving a reasonably open feel. The greens here are generally quick, and when the overall maintenance is on song, this is a parkland delight.
From the White course, usually played as the back-nine of the 18, there are stunning views down into Deauville, the horse racing track, casino and away across La Manche ( ... although you'll not see England, you may encounter plenty of Anglais on the course). There's also a strange one-wall ruin to marvel at on the White-nine.
