Golf de Saint-Cloud (Vert course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1911

Golf de Saint-Cloud (Vert course): The two courses of Golf de Saint-Cloud are located on what was previously known as the Buzenval estate; amongst its former owners ... Napolean Bonaparte's first wife Joséphine de Beauharnais. In 1913, the then owner of Saint-Cloud Country Club, an American lawyer named Henry Cachard, commissioned the legendary English course architect Harry Colt to design the championship Vert/Green course. The shorter par-67 Jaune/Yellow course was added in 1930.

Over the years Harry Colt's original design has been modified with additional tree-planting, bunkering and earth mounding. However, Colt's impressive layout still provides the underpinning for the many golfing challenges on this delightfully absorbing parkland course. Whereas flattish terrain characterises the course up to the par-4 7th, things become distinctly more undulating for the next eight holes. Some of the higher elevations offer views over Paris, although these can be obscured in summer when the trees lining the holes are in full leaf.

From its beginnings, Saint-Cloud was a gathering place for French high society to relax and enjoy the sporting pursuits of golf, tennis and polo. French presidents and British royalty have plied their golfing skills here. The clubhouse, all six storeys of it, is indeed a very grand affair. When you add in the shorter but also testing Jaune course and excellent practice facilities, it's easy to understand why Saint-Cloud remains one of the premier golfing venues around Paris.
