Golf du Claux Amic

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1992

Golf du Claux Amic: High in the hills above Grasse (the ancient perfume capital of the world), lies this relatively new and pleasantly challenging golf course. Laid out in former hunting grounds on a wooded hillside, the course is hilly in parts, although not too onerous to walk.

The quiet and naturally tree-lined holes present some intimidating drives, although on many occasions there is a tad more room out there than you at first think. With no roads or housing to disturb, you can apply your full concentration to nailing those tightish drives. A spectacular view looking down to faraway Cannes and out onto the Mediterranean opens up at the par-4 12th green. This wonderful vista comes as a welcome change from the ever-present, though always attractive woodland scenery.

There is not much water to worry about as you journey round, although a small pond needs to be crossed in front of the par-3 13th green. Maintenance standards are generally good, but one is left wondering why the excellent chateau no longer functions as a boutique hotel. It does however provide a large and sumptuous clubhouse.

Overall Claux Amic is a challenging woodland course and very well worth a visit. many visitors combine it with the even grander Chateau de Taulane, which is located a bit further along the D6085 from Grasse.

Traigh Golf Course (pronounced "try", and meaning "beach" in Gaelic): You'll find this nine-hole seaside gem on the scenic coast road (as opposed to the more inland and quicker A830) between Arisaig and Morar. Although not on the well-beaten path of Scotland's "trophy" courses, if you are passing through this area, it's a must play.
