Hôtel Golf le Kempferhof

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1990

Hôtel Golf le Kempferhof: In the tranquil grounds of the Kempferhof estate, just a kilometre from the German-French border (provided by the River Rhine), this excellent Robert von Hagge layout will test every facet of your golf game. At times open, but more often tight and tree-lined, the holes occupy a wonderfully quiet area of natural woodland.

For much of the time you'll need to drive the ball straight and true, not least at holes like the tough par-5 2nd, which wriggles its way through the trees with little room for error. On this top-quality layout an excellent and varied array of bunkering frequently threatens, while water also plays its full part in proceedings.

Each wonderfully crafted hole typically enjoys its own unique setting, although the par-4 1st and 13th holes come together on an hour-glass double-green, their respective fairways separated by a huge sand bunker. The excellent par-3 9th and closing par-4 18th also share a double green, this time directly in front of the clubhouse terrace.

The more open and linksy stretch from the par-4 13th to the short par-4 16th is home to one of Kempferhof's most challenging and memorable holes. The fabulous par-3 14th is played from tee-to-green across a good sized pond, the front edge of the green precociously protruding out into the pond.

With no roads or buildings around to disturb your concentration, you can focus your attention on hitting Kempferhof's tightish fairways, and sinking putts on the large and immaculate greens.

Did you know?

The Kempferhof estate dates back to 1684, when Nicolas de Kempfer acquired the rights to the land, following the signing of the Westphalian Peace treaty in 1681 (by which Alsace became part of France). Nicolas de Kempfer and Christophe Güntzer were amongst the first nobles of the mainly protestant Alsace to convert to the catholic religion. In return they were granted the village of Plobsheim.

In the 1800s the Dartein family acquired 46 hectares of land close to Plobsheim, and in the late-1800s Jules de Dartein, an engineer and eccentric patriarch, designed and built the distinctive chateau, combining local stone, brick and wood. In the tower there is a genuine throne room, while in the grounds near the main house is a small chapel, the final resting place of some of the Dartein family.

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
