Terre Blanche Golf Club (Château course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2000

Terre Blanche Golf Club (Château course): Originally intended as a wholly private facility, Terre Blanche's fabulous Château course now accepts a limited amount of outside visitor play. This wonderfully scenic and challenging 18-hole championship layout is complemented by the slightly shorter Riou course (which remains private, but can be played by resort guests). Designed by Englishman Dave Thomas, both courses provide sumptuous views onto the surrounding Provence countryside, which displays an exuberant mosaic of tree-clad hills and rustic villages.

The generally good-width and immaculately presented fairways on the Château course weave through a quiet forest of mature oaks and tall pines. A championship layout in every sense, the Château's many elevation changes are occasionally accompanied by tumbling rock-filled water hazards. The most notable of these comes at the wonderful downhill par-5 11th - the layout's signature hole.

In the middle of the front-nine, the course opens out around an attractive lake, which you'll need to navigate around at the 4th, 5th and 6th holes. A smaller lake also threatens at the 10th and 17th on the inward-nine. Stylish and often expansive fairway bunkering gives way to smaller though no less daunting sand traps around the usually large and undulating greens.

A handful of large new villas flank one or two holes, as do one or two much older ruins. But there's nothing here to detract from the naturalness and scenic beauty of Terre Blanche's most elegant Château course.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
