Keilir
Keilir Golf Course (Golfklubburinn Keilir): Iceland's well-rated Keilir golf course is a "lava and links" layout, located directly alongside the sea. The club's 18-hole championship Hvaleyrar course (Hvaleyrarvöllur) is complemented by the nine-hole Sveinskots academy course (Sveinskotsvöllur).
On the Hvaleyrar layout you'll find a sharp contrast between the bunkerless "lava flow" front-nine and the more classical links-style back-nine. On the newer front-nine loop, not a single bunker intrudes on the separation of the black hardened lava flows and the emerald expanse of closely mown fairway turf. Here it's more about skill and accuracy than power and distance. Wayward shots onto the lava are likely to produce some distinctly penal bounces.
By contrast the back-nine loop heads out-and-back onto a small linksy peninsula of land at the entrance to the Hafnafjördur harbour. This nine, with the academy course at its side, offers more typical golfing fare, combined with spectacular views to the nearby Alftanes peninsula and beyond to the famous Snaefellsglacier.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends during the golf season (generally late-May thru early-Sept).
Must book in advance. Tee-times available until 10pm, and midnight golf in June/July on request.
