Ootacamund Gymkhana Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1896

Ootacamund Gymkhana Club: The town of Ooty is home to a revered and very natural golf course. Occupying 193 acres of the rolling Wenlock Downs, here you can expect plenty of elevation change, and not a little help for your long game ... the beneficial effect of playing at 7,000 feet above sea level.

This ages old layout is spread across undulating wooded downland. With the Nilgiris range (Blue Mountains) in the background, the predominantly tree-lined course (and beyond) is full of eucalyptus, oak and rhododendron, and gorse in the more open "downland" stretches.

The course might be a bit on the rustic side, with the grass trimmed by local bovine grazers, and blue stones indicating the boundaries between fairway and rough. But like many of its golfing antecedents in the British Isles, it is steeped in history and guaranteed to put some fun and adventure back into your golf ... and perhaps a bit of Indian spice as well.

Did you know?

Ooty (short for Udhagamandalam) is a resort town in the Nilgiris Hills of southern India. Also know as the Blue Mountains, they form part of the southern section of the Western Ghats mountains that run for nearly a 1,000 miles down India's west side.

Founded as a British Raj summer resort, Ooty retains a working steam railway line. 15 km southeast of Ooty is the town of Wellington, home to the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), a training establishment for middle level officers of the Indian army, navy and air force.
