Bundoran Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1894

Bundoran Golf Club: founded in 1894 alongside the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran is one of the oldest golf clubs on Ireland's "Wild Atlantic" northwest coast. Laid out on a rugged headland overlooking Donegal Bay, this ever-undulating and well-maintained clifftop links offers wonderful ocean views, vistas of Bundoran's beach and town, and inland to the Dartry mountains.

This relatively resort friendly layout (which can depend on what the wind is up to!), is definitely more clifftop than "duneland links" in character. The often parallel running fairways, without too much penal rough or bushes between them, and not too much in the way of rolling dunes, give a spaciously open feel to proceedings.

The layout's openness should inspire confidence from the tee. Out of bounds threatens on a few holes on the "outer" front-nine loop, which partially encircles the "inner" back-nine loop.

You'll get closest to the popular Rougey clifftop path, and the panoramically picturesque ocean, at the start of the back-nine. The par-4 10th (Reservoir) steadily climbs from tee-boxes alongside the hotel to a wonderfully scenic green. The well bunkered par-4 11th (Tullan) commands the best views of the North West Atlantic coastline, with the ocean, a huge wind-blown dunescape and Tullan beach all gloriously in view.
