Franciacorta Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1986

Franciacorta Golf Club: A visit to Franciacorta provides the opportunity not only to sample the region's excellent wines, but also to enjoy the spectacular views and challenges of Franciacorta Golf Club. At times quite testing, at others more forgiving, this varied and immensely scenic layout was crafted by legendary course designer, Pete Dye, supported by Italian course architect, Marco Croze.

With vineyards and quiet, rural countryside all around, the course is laid out over pleasantly undulating terrain, which gently slopes away from the clubhouse. Water dangerously threatens on the opening five holes of the front-nine and opening three of the back-nine, all of them skirting alongside a good-sized lake (although nothing quite the size of nearby Lake Iseo - located four kilometres to the north).

The par-3 11th may only measure 120 metres from the tips, but the relatively small island green provides little margin for error. Other greens, notably on the par-4 2nd, par-3 5th and par-4 12th are surrounded by water on just three sides!

A liberal scattering of many varieties of trees gives a partly open, partly tree-lined feel to the layout, especially on the second half of each nine where you get away from the water. Beyond the course the wooded foothills of the Alps rise up in the foreground, while more substantive peaks feature in the distance, providing a scenic backdrop to many of the holes.

Did you know?

Franciacorta is home to a thriving wine growing industry, not least the famous Berlucchi label. Guido Berlucchi was a gentleman farmer in nearby Borgonato, who, in the 1950s, produced a still white wine called Pinot del Castello. In 1954 he met with Franco Ziliani, a young man of the area, and a recent graduate of the Institute of Enology in Alba.

Ziliani talked with Guido Berlucchi about his dream of producing a Franciacorta wine that could hold its own against Champagne. In spite of a host of start-up difficulties, the foundations where laid for an operation that realised Franco Ziliani's dream - a sparkling white wine that certainly does hold its own against Champagne.
