Kawana Hotel (Fuji course)

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1928

Kawana Hotel (Fuji course): the world-renowned, dramatic and immensely scenic Fuji course is kept company at Kawana by its shorter sibling, the public-access Oshima layout (one of Japan's oldest courses). Both are excellently maintained and provide stunning views out onto Sagami Bay.

Whereas the championship Fuji course plays as an out-and-back layout to the north of the hotel, the two nine-hole loops of the much shorter Oshima layout occupy the clifftop terrain to the hotel's South. Both are scenic and dramatic, and offer different golfing challenges.

Often vying with Hirono for the status of No.1 course in Japan, Kawana's Fuji course is another sublime Charles Hugh Alison layout. Unlike inland Hirono, here you can marvel at the golf as well as taking-in the splendour of a Pacific-facing clifftop setting.

The Fuji's stirring drama starts at the first, while the later clifftop holes put you directly above the sea's rocky shoreline ... as at the straight par-4 2nd, doglegging par-4 12th and the signature par-5 15th. At many holes deep fairway and greenside bunkering awaits, although perhaps not quite as deep as at Hirono. Frequent elevation changes will also need to be factored in to your shotmaking.

Stay&Play at Kawana Hotel: luxury onsite accommodation available ( ... the Fuji course is only open to members and hotel guests).

Did you know?

Kawana's Fuji course unsurprisingly takes its name from stunning Mount Fuji, which comes into view from the course. This most iconic of Japan's volcanic mountains rises to 3,776 metres, and lies 100 km to the north. The Oshima course is named after the large offshore volcanic island, which is also clearly visible from the Kawana courses.

The Fuji course has previously hosted the Japan Open championship (in 1952) and Japan PGA Championship (1939), more recently it has played host to the Fuji-Sankei Ladies Classic Tournament in April each year.

Published ranking

Fuji course:
Japan's 2nd best course (Golf Digest, 2025).
World's 53rd best course (GOLF Magazine, 2023/24) and 37th best public access course (Golf World, 2025).

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
