Damai Laut Golf & Country Club: This wonderfully peaceful and natural seaside resort, offers an abundance of fascinating excursions and activities, as well as an excellent Ron Fream designed golf course. Regularly voted one of Malaysia's most scenic layouts (and understandably so) Damai Laut is also one of the more challenging resort layouts, especially if attempted from the back tees with the afternoon wind blowing.
The front-nine (Lake course) introduces a pronounced elevation change at the dramatic and snaking par-5 2nd, with a dramatic descent to the front-nine's more characteristically flatter terrain. Within this relatively flat and open environment, many holes are dangerously flanked by lakes and ponds, with good bunkering and a line of palm trees also giving good definition to the holes.
The back-nine arguably contains some of the best holes, particularly as you get into the closing stretch. The very attractive island green par-3 13th is surrounded by sand rather than water, while the par-4 15th is regularly voted one of Malaysia's most scenic holes. After a semi-blind tee-shot, the approach is played to a green alongside the beach - affording wonderful views onto Senangin Bay (also known locally as Bay 7). An earlier visit to the ocean's edge is provided by the back-tee of the tough par-5 5th hole.
This well-maintained, challenging and at times dramatic resort course ends in fine style, with a tough semi-blind tee shot (the large rock is your marker) and then a testing approach over water to the slightly elevated final green.
With many views out to sea, as well as inland to ridges of jungle-clad hills, this well maintained and nicely presented layout will challenge and entertain in equal measure.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. Closed Mondays.
Must book in advance. Handicap required.
Compulsory golf carts available for hire. Caddies available if pre-booked.
Good, incl a 36-bay driving range.
As the name aptly suggests, Damai (meaning peace) and Laut (meaning sea) is a location that delivers both in large measure. The resort looks onto Senangin Bay, also known locally as Bay 7. The next bay north (Bay 6) is home to a hatchery for green turtles.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
