Tiara Melaka Golf & Country Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1994

Tiara Melaka Golf & Country Club: Within its 27-hole layout, Tiara Melaka contains the superb Woodland-nine, as good a nine-hole loop of jungle golf as you'll find anywhere in Malaysia. With dense jungle lining the way, and a few monkeys probably looking on, this immensely attractive rain forest environment contains many pleasantly undulating and very picturesque holes.

The par-4 3rd on the Woodland layout is a gem, requiring a strategic decision on the tee, either lay-up and leave a longer approach shot, or drive over a stream that diagonally crosses the fairway, with a tall cluster of trees as your marker.

The Meadow-nine gives solid support to the Woodland. Although very well laid out, it doesn't quite provide the same level of naturalness or tropical scenery. The final three holes on the Meadow-nine provide an excellent finish. There's plenty of water to be crossed, towering trees to be avoided (on the fairway at 17!) and a fairway hugging lake to be avoided all the way along the rightside of the 18th.

The Lake-nine, although containing some enjoyable and testing holes, is not quite in the same league as the Woodland or Meadow, the combination on which most tournaments are played.

Although the immaculate greens are large (occasionally huge), the fairways vary from good-width to testingly tight. Maintenance at Tiara Melaka is generally good, although if improved a few notches, this is a layout that could challenge for inclusion amongst Malaysia's very best.

Tiara Melaka's club logo depicts the world's smallest deer, the mouse deer, which is also the state symbol for Malacca.

Just outside the city of Malacca (in the Malay language Melaka) you'll find four well-rated and enjoyable golf courses. 35 km N of the city centre is the A'Famosa Resort and a Ross Watson design. Just 15 km NE of the centre are three clubs that almost touch at their boundaries: Ayer Keroh (Ghaffar Baba), Tiara Melaka (Nelson & Wright) and Orna (Andy Dye).

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.

The Dutch GC, The Netherlands

The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.

Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
