Where2Golf says:

Old Waverly is one of Mississippi's most admired parkland layouts, often rated among the Magnolia state's top three courses. This excellently presented Stay&Play golf venue combines Southern elegance and hospitality in equal measure, and from 2016 a new 18-hole stablemate, the Gil Hanse-designed Mossy Oak course. Whereas Old Waverly is generally accessible only on a Stay&Play basis, its new companion, the Mossy Oak course can be played on a daily fee or Stay&Play basis.

The two nine-hole loops of Old Waverly play out-and-back from a palatial, conservatory-style clubhouse. This beautifully elegant building, which has many Scottish baronial trappings inside, provides a picture-perfect backdrop to the par-5 9th and stunning par-4 18th holes. Always immaculately maintained, the excellently crafted Jerry Pate & Bob Cupp design roams through a tree-lined front-nine, where stylish bunkering and slick run-off areas defend the top quality greens.

The opening three holes of the back-nine make good use of a small lake, which creates a more open feel, before predominantly tree-lined fairways resume. The lake returns in menacing style at the good-length par-3 17th and excellent 18th, which dog-legs along the lakeside to a dangerously water-defended green.

This venerable but not particularly ancient Golf Club has hosted many prestigious and top level tournaments, including the 54th US Women's Open, played in 1999 and won by Juli Inkster. For more details see Top Golf Tournaments at Old Waverly Golf Club.

Old Waverly honours a 19th century series of novels written by Sir Walter Scott, one of Scotland's greatest storytellers. The first in the series, called Waverley, was released anonymously, while subsequent titles carried the words "by the author of Waverley." For nearly a century they were among the most popular and widely-read novels in Europe. Scott's titles include: Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of The Lake, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.
