Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1989

Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort: Three equally good nine-hole loops - the Magnolia, Azalea and Dogwood - make up the pleasant and relatively easy-going 27-hole layout here at Brunswick Plantation.

Sometimes lined with tall pines, other times occupying more open terrain with a scattering of younger palms, the gently undulating, good-width fairways weave their way through Brunswick's houses and condominiums, which are usually held a reasonable distance back from the course.

With the impressive mansion-style clubhouse occupying the highest point on the plantation, each nine starts and finishes with a flourish, and the best of the undulations and tree-lined holes. The middle section of each nine then moves into flatter and more open terrain, the real estate becomes more noticeable, and in consequence the holes feel a tad less interesting.

Several ponds of varying sizes, small creeks, earthmounding and relatively shallow bunkering lend good definition to the holes, and also ensure you need to keep your wits about you. The short par-4 6th and 7th holes on the Azalea-nine for example, are a typically mischievous pair - not a problem if treated with respect, but card-wreckers if you get your distances wrong.

The generally large (sometimes very large), subtly sloping greens are often slightly dome-shaped, but never too elevated. With plenty of water around, all three nines present their own challenges, difficulties and potential birdie opportunities; perhaps the Dogwood-Azalea makes the strongest combination, although that's certainly open to debate amongst the members.
