Spain ranks among Europe’s premier golf destinations, combining top-tier courses with stunning scenery and a rich cultural atmosphere. A well planned golf road trip through Spain allows travelers to combine challenging rounds with unforgettable experiences off the course.
Golfers from across the globe are drawn to Spain for its sunny weather, varied landscapes, and long-standing golfing heritage. From sun soaked fairways on the Mediterranean coast to inland gems surrounded by mountains and vineyards, the country has something for every type of player. Travelers planning their trip will come across a wide range of resources for sports and leisure, whether they want to book tee times, find local attractions or even centros de ocio (leisure centers) for entertainment after a day on the course. A Spanish golf road trip is therefore about much more than the game itself, as it combines culture, relaxation and lifestyle.
Exploring the Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol is often the first stop for golf travelers in Spain, and for good reason. The Andalusian coast hosts over 70 golf courses, making it one of the densest golfing areas in Europe. Courses such as Valderrama, home to the 1997 Ryder Cup, and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande offer world class layouts with a blend of challenge and beauty.
Staying in towns like Marbella or Estepona provides easy access to top courses and vibrant nightlife. Beyond the fairways, travelers can enjoy Andalusian tapas, explore old town streets filled with history, or relax by the Mediterranean Sea. With mild winters and sunny days, the Costa del Sol offers year round play, making it an ideal starting point for a golf road trip.
Golfing in Catalonia and the Costa Brava
Heading northeast, Catalonia offers a very different but equally appealing golf experience. The Costa Brava region is home to some of Spain’s most highly regarded courses, including PGA Catalunya Resort, which has hosted European Tour events. The Stadium Course is often listed among continental Europe’s finest, blending bold design with striking vistas of the Pyrenees.
The cultural highlights of Barcelona are never far away, making this part of Spain perfect for those who want to combine golf with city exploration. Travelers can spend the morning playing golf and the afternoon visiting iconic sights like La Sagrada Familia or enjoying Catalan cuisine in a local market. The blend of world class golf and cosmopolitan energy makes Catalonia a standout stop on any Spanish golf road trip.
Discovering Golf in Northern Spain
For golfers looking for something less known, northern Spain offers hidden gems that are worth the journey. Regions such as Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country have courses with stunning natural backdrops and a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the busy southern coast. Real Sociedad de Golf de Neguri near Bilbao, for example, combines seaside views with a challenging layout.
Northern Spain is also famous for its gastronomy. Travelers can pair a morning round with an afternoon of pintxos in San Sebastián or a visit to a winery in La Rioja. The cooler climate provides a different playing experience, especially during the summer months when southern Spain can be very hot. For those seeking both authenticity and variety, including northern Spain in a golf road trip adds a unique flavor to the journey.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
