Ryder Cup 2025 qualifications

Ryder Cup 2025 qualifications: who will be part of USA and Europe teams?
Between the 26th and 28th of September in Long Island, New York, we will assist at the 2025 Ryder Cup. The tournament that sees top golfers from Europe and the United States facing each other will take place at Bethpage Black and the rival teams are quickly taking shape.

The debate in golf circles is heating up, as it usually happens before a tournament of this importance: who will qualify for the U.S. and European teams?
For those interested in knowing which players are likely to be selected for the two teams, several sports news sites, such as the one linked here, provide comparative details.

Team USA
Keegan Bradley is the captain of team USA and is considering whether he wants to play or not. His team is mighty. Bradley is in top shape and could decide to use one of his six picks on himself. For what we know, the players sure to play are Scottie Scheffler; Xander Schauffele; J.J. Spaun; Russell Henley; Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau. These are Bethpage bound because of the automatic qualifiers rule. Should he reserve a place for himself, Bradley will use a captain’s pick on him and call other 5 golfers.

Veterans Scheffler and Schauffele were the first two to qualify for the competition. They are too good and won’t be denied a participation in this historical clash. Spaun, the U.S. Open champion, qualified as third and is eager to make his Ryder Cup debut. If these six are certain to golf, there’s a tight race for the final spots on the 12-man U.S. Team, that happens to include the captain. These final weeks before the tournament will be decisive in putting together the roster that will actually play. Bradley could decide to surprise his opponents by shuffling his deck a bit.

Team Europe
For the visiting team, things are less clear. Here there isn’t any playing-captaincy discussion. Luke Donald returns to captain the European Team after a convincing win at Marco Simone, in 2023, but won’t play. His second straight win, though, would be very difficult. In its quest for Europe’s first overseas win since the 2012 Miracle at Medinah, still fresh in the enthusiasts’ memory, the visiting team will almost certainly be led by veterans such as Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. There is an ample discussion around the remaining spots.

The two latest golfers qualified, for the European side, are Robert MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton. The sixth name will be known after the conclusion of the Betfred British Masters, one of the top golf tournaments in the world, which is ongoing while we write this. Finally, on the 1st of September the full roster will be announced. There is some uncertainty around Donald’s wildcards, but some names are more than merely serious candidates to play.

We may consider Jon Rahm from Spain, Ludvig Aberd from Sweden and Norwegian Viktor Hovland as part of Team Europe, given their skills, talent, expertise and knowledge of top-tier tournaments. Since the captain won’t play, there are still three free spots to be claimed for Europe. We can’t say who will be called but we think the challengers will be chosen between Irishman Shane Lowry (who could easily qualify by himself, given his rank, and claim the sixth automatic spot); Danish Rasmus Hojgaard (the only player who could claim the sixth qualifier instead of Lowry); his brother Nicolai, who is a great golfer but not on par with his sibling or Aaron Rai, from England, who had a totally eye-catching 2024 season, but has slowed down a bit since.
