4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1975

Palmares Ocean Living & Golf Resort: The busy and now more highly-rated Palmares course underwent a substantial transformation in 2011. Its extension to 27-holes and significant remodelling was designed and overseen by world renowned designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. The resulting three nine-hole loops (Alvor, Lagos and Praia) ensure a golf experience with plenty of variety, as well as beautiful sea views, and vistas over the surrounding countryside and distant sierras.

The Praia-nine's opener is an excellent tree-lined downhill dog-legging par-4, after which you cross the Faro-Portimao rail track and enter the flattest part of the course. Here you'll enjoy four duneland seaside holes, bounded by the beach and the rail line. This links-style environment continues through the rest of the Praia-nine, with the strong uphill par-5 9th, climbing back out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the clubhouse.

Located primarily in the northern part of the property, the Alvor-nine has more of a parkland character, playing through corridors of mature pines. Elevation changes are integral to the Alvor's design. A majority of holes ascend hillsides or descend through tightish valleys. A momentary preview of the duneland holes comes at the 6th and 7th. As with the other nine-hole loops, the Alvor concludes with a gentle ascent back to the clubhouse.

The Lagos-nine initially exudes the same parkland character as Alvor. It possesses the only two lakes found on the entire site, which come into play at the short par-3 3rd and long par-4 6th. Holes 7 and 8 return you to links-style duneland golf, as found on most of the Praia-nine.

Originally, Palmares was owned by a Portuguese family who first built a golf course on the site in 1975. The resort was bought by family-owned company Onyria Golf Resorts in 2003, and a substantial redevelopment of the course and extension to 27-holes was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr in 2011. Residential developer Kronos Homes acquired the resort on a joint venture basis in 2017.
