Quinta do Vale Golf Resort: located amongst small rolling hills a good 10 km back from the coast, Quinta do Vale is home to a well-regarded Seve Ballesteros-designed golf course. Close by, and visible from the course's higher elevations and the clubhouse, is the Portuguese-Spanish border, clearly marked by the Guadiana River.
Not too much real estate has been, or can be built around the course, which retains a pleasantly open and natural feel. The equal number of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s weave their way through the rugged landscape. Several ponds and a meandering stream making their presence felt, especially on the arguably more testing front-nine loop, where water constantly threatens.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: men 28, women 36.

Excellent
With a population of around 6500, the town of Castro Marim mirrors the Algarve in that it looks out towards the sea and the mountains. The town is on the west bank of the Guadiana River; guarding the town on opposite hills, stand the medieval Castle of Castro Marim and the 17th century Forte de São Sebastião (fortress). These ancient monuments bear witness to the importance of the town as a border settlement in medieval Portugal.
Located just 2.5 km from Quinta do Vale is another of the eastern Algarve's inland golf courses, Castro Marim, which includes onsite accommodation.
