Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort is home to a well-rated Seve Ballesteros design, which opened the year following the tragic death of the legendary Spanish golfer and course architect. Needless to say, it was one of his last design projects to come to fruition.
This relatively open "heathland" layout should not disappoint, with many attractive features and several excellent holes to enjoy. With nearly half the holes seriously threatened by water, especially alongside the greens, Seve has once again thrown down a tough golfing challenge.
Several stretches of the back-nine overlook the Atlantic Ocean, which lies a kilometre or so to the west. The highlight of the closing nine comes at the risk-reward par-5 18th, which provides a panoramic view back across the holes you've just played, with the clubhouse beckoning, and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.
Pick of the holes: the signature hole on the front-nine loop is the par-3 3rd, played to a water-surrounded island green. The Óbidos lagoon provides a stunning backdrop to the hole.

15 km to the southeast is the historic and walled city of Óbidos ... a walk around the top of the wall is possible, but with several open-sided sections, it is not recommended for anyone with even the slightest touch of vertigo!
Directly bordering Royal Óbidos to the north are the more recently opened golf facilities of West Cliffs Golf Links, with a layout designed by Cynthia Dye McGarey.

Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).
Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
