West Cliffs Golf Links: this much heralded addition to Portugal's top-rated courses, is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Óbidos Lagoon. This challenging layout occupies rolling sandy terrain interspersed with coastal vegetation. Property development is already well underway beyond the course, more so on the front-nine than on the back, which should retain its more natural feel.
Set back a few hundred yards from the sea, the two nine-hole loops are laid out to the east and west of the modern clubhouse. Both nines are bordered by pine groves and rolling sand dunes, and offer sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Straying beyond the generally good-width fairways is not advised ... heather, gorse, assorted bushes and ice-plant awaits! Deep oyster-shaped bunkers menacingly guard the roller-coaster greens.
Although all the par-3s play rather short from the usual visitor tees, the 12th combines a menacing sandy waste area on your right, with wonderful Atlantic Ocean views beyond. Immediately to the south of the course are the 18-holes of the Royal Óbidos golf course.
Closing things out at West Cliffs, the par-4 18th provides a memorable finish as you play down from an elevated tee. The final green, with its glorious ocean backdrop, is approached over bunkers and a threatening greenside pond.
Pick of the holes: after weaving past some of the resort properties, the front-nine comes alive with back-to-back par-5s at 6 and 7. Both may leave a dent on your scorecard. The par-4 10th gets the back-nine off to an excellent start; played from an elevated tee in front of the clubhouse, the understated simplicity of this classic links golf hole is complemented by its stunning oceanic backdrop.

West Cliffs golf is managed by Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort, which is located 8 km along the coast to the south-west.
Although the Algarve and the Estoril coast have long captured the golf destination honours in Portugal, the Costa Prata (Silver Coast) has powered into view in recent years. Here in close proximity to each other you will find the original standard bearer, Praia D'El Rey, and relative newcomers Bom Sucesso (2008), Royal Obidos (2012) and West Cliffs (2017).

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
