Auchterarder Golf Club: this easy-walking parkland course sits directly alongside the PGA Centenary course of its revered neighbour, the Gleneagles Resort ( ... the courses rub shoulders at Auchterarder's par-5 6th). Although shorter than its Gleneagles peers, at 5,800 yards from the tips, the views from Auchterarder towards Glendevon and the Ochil Hills are equally captivating.
The partly tree-lined, partly open out-and-back layout offers six par-3s, with four of them coming on the back-nine. Opening the round is a mid-length par-4, which requires a slightly unnerving drive over a wall and between two mature trees, which stand alongside the two-storey pebble-dashed clubhouse.
At times a bit compact, at others more spacious, the gently undulating terrain throws-up an occasional blind tee-shot. Most of the time however the generally good-width fairways are clear to see. A bit of noise from the main road into Auchterarder town is never too disturbing.
The predominantly tree-lined holes are not too onerously bunkered along the fairways, but more so around the fast-paced, good-sized greens. At the short, tight, par-4 7th, an interesting 50-yard hour-glass green may stretch your putting skills, especially if your approach comes up well short when playing to a back pin. Beware, there's always more slope than you'd at first think on Auchterarder's varied sized, excellently maintained greens.
Pick of the holes: the assorted collection of six par-3s includes some long, some short, some well-bunkered, others less so, and some uphill and some down. With four par-3s in the last seven holes, you can potentially make-up from earlier errant play. But with a hidden green at the 14th, plenty of length at the 16th, and a tough uphill shot at 18, none of these "short" holes lack challenge.

With a High Street that stretches for over 1.5 miles, it's no wonder the small town of Auchterarder is often referred to as the "lang toun." The town sits just above the main A9 road, which winds its way up through the centre of Scotland, connecting the Scottish Lowlands with the Highlands and Speyside.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
