Elgin
Elgin Golf Club: if the coastal links courses on the Moray Firth are giving you a hard time, Elgin may have just the answer ... and that's not a reference to the remarkable ruins of a centuries-old Catholic cathedral which stands in the town. Elgin also boasts a pleasant and relatively easy-going parkland golf course.
Typically kept in excellent condition, this predominantly tree-lined layout, offers an enjoyable and scenic round. The layout comprises predominantly straightaway holes (with a couple of notable doglegging exceptions), which will test your unswerving accuracy from the tee. Stray too far offline and trees or OOB awaits. There's also plenty of small fairway and greenside bunkers to keep you honest around the excellent greens. No surprise the locals have dubbed this course the "Wentworth of the North".
Elgin offers a potential source of solace for the weather-beaten "links" golfer, in so far as it contrasts with the area's many storied (but often windswept) coastal courses. Rather than sea and beach views, Elgin's attractions include views over the town of Elgin and away to the Moray coast to the north, and hills stretching inland to the distant Cairngorm Mountains to the south.
Pick of the holes: the par-3 15th (Lime Kiln), as its name implies, comes with former lime kilns once used by local industry and agriculture.

The town of Elgin was formerly one of Scotland's cathedral cities. The very impressive ruins of the former cathedral stand testament to its very troubled past. Even as a ruin, the cathedral stands out as one of Scotland’s most ambitious and beautiful medieval buildings. The 13th-century west front represents one of the finest architectural achievements in Scotland from that period.
Scotland's 96th best course (Golf World, 2024).
Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).
Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
