Grantown-on-Spey
Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club plays home to a relatively short, excellently maintained and well-regarded parkland/moorland golf course. Set within a Scottish Highlands environment, the layout sits on the edge of town, separated from the River Spey (of whisky fame!) by a few hundred yards of pine forest.
This blissful northern golfing outpost nestles in partly-open and part-leafy parkland, with a distinctly moorland feel also evident. Braid's signature touches are much in evidence, including pop-up mounds, "doughnut" bunkers, and bunkers that front the greens, albeit 50 yards ahead of the putting surfaces.
The layout comprises predominantly straightaway holes, with a few gentle doglegs also in the mix. Naturally undulating holes, and others of a flatter disposition (especially the first six), provide an excellent test for your all-round game. Whether you're playing through the woodland stretches (7 thru' 12) or into the more open spaces, water hazards (including the revered waters of Speyside) are not in play.
The neat bunkering shouldn't prove to troublesome either, but, in high-season, beware spraying the ball too far offline into the uncompromising rough. The final five holes, all on the short side, form a tightish out-and-back loop from the clubhouse, with considerably more undulation than the much flatter first six.
Pick of the holes: where the course might lack quantity (i.e. length), the par-3s in particular ensure quality is to the fore. The uphill par-3 8th (Hard Hillock), and slightly downhill, heavily bunker-defended, short par-3 16th (Wee Dunt) are especially memorable.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

Grantown (since 1898 known as Grantown-on-Spey) is the capital of Strathspey, an area around the strath (valley) of the River Spey. Grantown is a relatively small town, but one with a grand history of tourism. One of the biggest draws to the area around Grantown is its famed whisky distilleries, including such iconic names as Aberlour, Balvenie, Dalwhinnie, Glenfarclas, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Macallan, Knockando and Tamdhu.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
