St Medan
St Medan Golf Club: Scotland's most southerly golf club is undeniably one of its most scenic. This nine-hole layout with two separate teeing positions per hole, gives you ample opportunity to take-in the glorious vistas, especially if you go round twice.
Much needed "local knowledge" gained on your first circuit (on a debut visit), will make the second nine infinitely more pleasurable ... and less confusing! There's plenty of elevation change, with several blind tee and approach shots in the mix. From some tee boxes, like that at the par-4 2nd, the direction of travel may take some careful working out.
From the long plunging downhill par-3 1st/10th, to the par-3 9th/18th, you'll be enthralled by the captivating views, and challenged by the layout's sometimes quirky character. The par-4 7th/16th offers up one of the more zany blind approach shots of the round! The par-4 6th/15th brings you right out to the land's end, with beaches on either side.
If St Medan is an example of how golf was meant to be, one might be excused for thinking that few would have taken-up the game. But, as an occasional reminder of how golf was played, it's an absolute gem!

St Medan is located on the west coast of the Machars peninsula in the Scottish region of Galloway. Close to the golf is the fishing village of Port William, not to be confused with the touristic town of Fort William, which is located in the western Scottish Highlands, several hours drive to the north.
The course's name comes from an early English/Irish saint, whose origins are unclear and much debated. St Medan's name is also found in the form of Kirkmaiden, two Galloway villages located either side of Luce Bay, one near Glasserton (near the golf), the other near Drummore on the Rhinns of Galloway.
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
