Wigtownshire County Golf Club

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1894

Wigtownshire County Golf Club: known locally as "The County", here you'll find a flattish links golf course that sits alongside Wigtown Bay, while also facing inland towards the soft Galloway Hills.

This friendly, welcoming and nicely presented club doesn't put on airs and graces as it serves-up an enjoyable and easy-walking links layout. Scenic views occur throughout the round, with the back-nine arguably containing the more interesting and varied holes.

Around the turn on this out-and-back layout, the Water of Luce river estuary provides a wonderfully scenic and natural backdrop to the holes. On both the front and back nines you'll also play holes that run directly alongside the shoreline of Wigtown Bay, itself part of the much larger Luce Bay. Such bay-hugging holes include the doglegging par-4 4th (St Helena), par-5 6th (Blackthorn), and long par-4 15th (Piltanton).

The often circular, domed, subtly-sloping greens are not too onerously bunker defended, a trait they share with the generally good-width fairways. One small surprise, is the amount of walking back you have to do from several greens to the subsequent teeing grounds. Perhaps this was necessitated by the extension to 18-holes in 1978.

Pick of the holes: although not directly bayside, the straightaway short par-4 14th (The Mains) is a lovely hole, played to a slightly elevated green that's bunker-defended left and right.

Did you know?

Wigtownshire, otherwise formerly known as the County of Wigtown, is an historic Scottish county. It lost its county status in 1975, when it was folded into the unitary council area of Dumfries & Galloway. The old county town of Wigtown, is much smaller than the larger port town of Stranraer, which was also part of Wigtownshire.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
