Atlantic Beach Golf Club: There is much to commend this challenging and thoroughly absorbing golf course north of Cape Town. Although much of the perimeter of the course has gradually been encircled by real estate, a good margin of fynbos vegetation has been retained to separate the gently undulating and always testing holes from the housing.
The wonderfully varied fynbos is not alone in underpinning Atlantic Beach's pleasantly natural feel. Several tame Springboks roam the fairways, and from the course there are fabulous views of Table Mountain, Robben Island and the Atlantic Ocean. The course itself is thoroughly enjoyable and often immensely challenging.
The fairways and light semi-rough often present relatively tight targets (especially on a first outing), with the thick fynbos awaiting anything hit too wayward. The gentle undulations of the fairways are mirrored, sometimes excessively so, in the often large and seriously sloping greens.
With sandy waste areas lining some fairways and deep bunkering and testing run-offs around the greens, it is not just several tight tee shots that will keep you on your toes. Among many excellent holes, the signature par-3 12th is the kind of gem found on some of the world's best links courses, while the blind drive at the par-5 4th is a knee-trembler, and the testing par-5 1st will clear away any cobwebs at the start of your round.
Allowing for the ever-present housing, albeit set in an originally very natural setting, Atlantic Beach can be enjoyed by links aficionados and holiday golfers alike.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends; more restricted on weekends.
Must book in advance. Handicap required

Good
Atlantic Beach provides a wonderful example of South Africa's fynbos, the naturally growing coastal vegetation that contains all manner of shrubs, flowers and small trees.
However, do not inspect it too closely or go rooting around in the fynbos to find lost balls. It is also home to several dangerous snakes, including puff adders, Cape cobras and boom slangs (tree snakes).
Atlantic Beach has hosted South African Sunshine Tour events.
South Africa's 58th best course (SA's Top 100 Courses, 2024).

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises. Explore the grounds, connect with others, embrace new challenges, and dive into an unforgettable celebration. Click here to buy tickets.
