Beachwood CC
Beachwood Country Club (formerly part of Durban Country Club): Located about 6 km further north from the top-rated Durban Country Club, the Beachwood course was built on indigenous woodland around a mangrove swamp (the mangrove swamp is believed to be one of the last of its kind on the KwaZulu-Natal coast).
The Beachwood layout benefits from the same pleasantly undulating terrain as its more renowned "parent". The course also benefitted from a Gary Player make-over in the mid-1990s, which added many stylish fairway and greenside bunkers, as well as several nicely elevated tees.
Bordered by thick coastal vegetation on its seaward side, many excellent holes have been created on this fairly narrow strip of coastal terrain. The landward side is flanked by a small ridge, on which several large luxury homes look down on the course. The aforementioned mangrove swamp mainly appears on the front-nine at the southern end of the course.
The layout requires several tight drives to be threaded between the bushes, small trees and mangroves, not least at the 3rd and 4th holes, two short, back-to-back par-5s. At times the course presents a more open feel, particularly on the closing stretch.
Although the sea is just a short pitch shot away from many holes, it mostly remains hidden behind the vegetation lining the course. Mixed in with the wonderful array of birdlife, don't be surprised to hear occasional light aircraft and helicopters overhead; the fairways here are on the final approach into the local Virginia aerodrome.

Beachwood Golf Club was originally founded by Percy Gilbert Stiebel in the late-1920s. In 1994 it was acquired by Durban Country Club (located 6 km S of the Beachwood course). Beachwood was later sold by Durban CC and is now independently operated.
The Italian Club next to the 4th fairway was the original clubhouse until 1962. The current clubhouse has been successfully converted into a pub, café, entertainment venue and fitness centre called Blues.
