Where2Golf says:

De Zalze Golf Club: Taking its name from the early wine farmers (see Did You Know section below), De Zalze is also now home to a busy and always popular golf course. The vineyards all around you are constant reminders that you are in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine growing region, and the towering mountain ranges to south and east underline that this is one of the most scenic locations in the Western Cape. Real estate, in the form of white-walled villas, is also much in evidence, but thankfully does not encroach too closely onto the course - a few rows of vines creating space between the housing and any wayward drives. The solid but less demanding front-nine will allow you to soak up the scenery, while the more innovative back-nine contains the greater challenges, guaranteed to keep your mind on the golfing job at hand. The back-nine brings into play a good-sized lake, which comes dangerously into the picture at the short par-3 12th. The sometimes driveable par-4 13th, actually has you teeing off from within the lake itself, the island tee-boxes connected to terra firma by a pleasant boardwalk. A cascading stream crosses in front of the par-5 17th green, while a trip to the back tees of the short par-4 18th will reveal the most spectacular view of them all (well worth climbing up the steps to take a look !). With good quality maintenance and an excellent and varied collection of par-3's, De Zalze is definitely worth including on your golf (and wine) list when visiting the Cape.

Did you know?

For well over 300 years, since the late 1600's, wine growing has been at the heart of the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate. Wine was produced on three farms, known as Groote Zalze, Kleine Zalze and De Vleie. These farms now make up the De Zalze Estate. >> In 2006 De Zalze (together with neighbouring Stellenbosch GC) hosted the prestigious World Amateur Team Championships (WATC). The biennial WATC, involves 3-person teams competing for the Eisenhower Trophy (men) and Espirito Santo Trophy (women). In 2006 at De Zalze, there was a nail-biting home win for the South African women's team, while the Eisenhower Trophy was won by the Netherlands (perhaps appropriate in a wine growing region that was originally established by Dutch settlers!). For more information on the WATC see our entry in the Golf Dictionary section.
