Hermanus Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1907

Hermanus Golf Club: Although often overshadowed by nearby Arabella on the visiting golfers' roster, Hermanus has undergone significant recent changes that have greatly improved its standing and degree of challenge, while also adding an additional loop of nine-holes. With the introduction in 2007 of new fairways, greens, earth-mounding and tee boxes, there is inevitably a bedding-in process to go through, but all the signs are good.

Now with three out-and-back nine-hole loops, the course takes you close to mountains, through several tree-lined stretches and almost down to the sea's edge (although two rows of houses prevent you getting right alongside the beach). Variety seems to be a recurring theme throughout. Mixed in with the usually good-width and nicely undulating fairways, there are some tightish drives to make, not least at the pine tree-lined, short par-5 11th. The greens can vary from small and subtly sloping, to large and multi-tiered.

On many occasions the feel here is that of a classic parkland course, at other times things get a bit more open. The contrasting mountain and sea views are occasionally complemented by some real estate, although this is confined to a few sections of the course perimeter.

Did you know?

Mention Hermanus to most South Africans and they will tell you it is the whale-watching capital of the Cape. This charming fishing (and whale-watching) village is popular with Capetonians as a weekend getaway. During the Christmas and Easter holidays the resident population of 8000 often swells to over 40000. Due to this influx, the Hermanus Golf Club has always experienced heavy traffic at these times of the year.
