Houghton
Houghton Golf Club: Set in a residential suburb just a few kilometres from the city centre, Houghton is home to one of Johannesburg's oldest golf clubs, but most recent courses.
In 2007/8 the decades-old original course was closed, torn-up and an impressive new Jack Nicklaus signature design took its place. This bold redevelopment included the land on which the clubhouse was located being sold to a developer for construction of 280 apartments and a 180 room hotel.
Creating such changes to a Jo'burg stalwart may have been something of a shock to its older members, but has resulted in an exciting design, where plenty of water, sand and mature trees are skilfully crafted onto the gently undulating terrain. The result is still a picturesque but certainly more demanding layout.
There is not much to look onto beyond the course, but as before, top-quality maintenance standards will remain an integral Houghton hallmark.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and Sundays. Saturdays reserved for club members.
Must book in advance. Proof of handicap required
Non-metal spike facility. Caddies available at all times. White socks must be worn to accompany shorts.
