Milnerton
Milnerton Golf Club: Laid out between the Atlantic Ocean and the Rietvlei lagoon, Milnerton is a spacious links golf course that provides fabulous views across Table Bay and onto the unparalleled splendour of Table Mountain. The city and harbour of Cape Town also come stunningly into view from several holes.
This wonderfully natural environment, created by so many ocean and lagoon-side holes, is slightly compromised (from a links purist's standpoint), by the presence of two stretches of housing, which flank several holes in the middle section of the course.
With generally good-width fairways occupying relatively flat terrain, an absence of thick rough, and relatively sparse bunkering, you might be thinking that an easy-going, low-scoring round lies in store. However, as with most seaside courses, the biggest determining factor in how you score will inevitably be the wind. If its blowing too fiercely, there are some dangerous water hazards, in addition to the ocean and the lagoon, that will be brought even more seriously into play.
Although there are a few holes lacking clear definition (especially if this is your first outing here), the combination of links-style terrain and wonderful sea and lagoon views, are really the high points of this course. Almost inevitably, some housing gets into the act, but it should not detract from your enjoyment of a round at Milnerton. A force 6 or stronger breeze - now that's a different matter!

Good
Milnerton has hosted several Sunshine Tour events including the PGA South African Masters in 1978 and each year thereafter until 1983. Top American golfer, Calvin Peete, playing the course for the first time, called it a "Mickey Mouse course" after shooting a course record 63 in perfect playing conditions. During his second round the Cape Doctor (Cape Town's weather system) blew in, and Peete shot an 83!
It is not unusual during the winter months to catch sight of whales and dolphins from the oceanside holes.
South Africa's 90th best course (SA's Top 100 Courses, 2024).

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
