King George V conferred the Royal title on Port Alfred GC in 1924, based on a visit in 1923 by Prince Arthur & Princess Alexander of Connaught. Prince Arthur, one of Queen Victoria's 42 grandchildren, was Governor General of South Africa at the time; his wife Princess Alexander was a great-grandaughter of Queen Victoria and granddaughter of Edward VII.
There are four golf clubs in South Africa honoured by royal prerogative: Royal Cape (1910), Royal Port Alfred (1924), Royal Johannesburg (1931) and Royal Durban (1932).
