CC Jo'burg (Rocklands)
The Country Club Johannesburg (Rocklands course): Although a more recent addition than the Country Club of Johannesburg's very stylish Woodmead course, the Rocklands layout (formerly known as the Woodlands course) also provides an excellent golfing challenge in very pleasant surroundings. The terrain here is equally undulating but more open, giving rise to several holes that feel rather linksy in character.
At over 7,400 yards from the back tees, and with long grassy rough awaiting wayward tee-shots on many holes, you will need to employ good course management to score well, as well as some reasonably straight and long-hitting. Your short game will also need to be on song, with large, fast and sloping greens, usually protected by sizeable greenside bunkers, often one to the left and one right.
Water hazards are sparingly used on the Rockland's front-nine, but pose many threats on the back-nine, not least during the stretch from the good-length par-5 13th, through to the par-3 17th.
Occupying a slightly more elevated position than its sibling, the Rocklands course offers many attractive views over neighbouring Sandton suburbs, and further away to Johannesburg's downtown skyline. With the benefit of a generally high standard of green-keeping on both courses, try to make time to play the Woodmead and the Rocklands on your visit to the prestigious Country Club of Johannesburg.
Visitors welcome on weekdays; more restricted on weekends.
