Wingate Park Country Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1947

Wingate Park Country Club: Tall gum trees, pines and other indigenous species give excellent definition to the holes on this enjoyable and busy parkland layout, located in the south-eastern suburbs of Pretoria. Within the spacious confines of this pleasant parkland environment, there is a welcome absence of real estate intruding onto the course.

The combination of mainly tree-lined holes and good-sized, shallow bunkering around the smallish greens, will ensure you golf game is sufficiently probed and tested. Water hazards are not too abundant, but occasionally they play their part, not least in front of the par-4 9th hole, where a two-tier water feature (complete with waterfalls) must be crossed to find the safety of the green.

The two nine-hole loops are not overly undulating, and contain a mix of good-width and tighter fairways. The usually wide band of rough separating the holes is not too penal, although for wayward hitters it is more likely to be trees rather than the rough, which create problems in lining-up a direct approach to the greens.

Beyond the course there is nothing particularly scenic to admire, but this is a golf course tucked away in a quiet environment, where pleasant parkland, a solid layout and reasonably good standards of green-keeping can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Did you know?

Wingate Park CC is named after Orde Charles Wingate, a senior British serving officer who became famous leading his Chindit brigade in Burma during the Second World War. Orde Wingate was very influenced by and supportive of the Zionist cause to establish a homeland in Palestine.

Perhaps not a surprise therefore, that Wingate Park CC was originally a Jewish club, whose policy was that membership should be open to all, regardless of position or creed. The Star of David is still incorporated within the club's logo.

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
