The Sotogrande development is home to five 18-hole par-72 courses, all within close proximity of each other: Valderrama (6389 m from back tees); Real (Royal) Sotogrande (6224 m); La Reserva (6721 m); Almenara (6252 m); La Canada (5841 m - a municipal course with 9-holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and 9 by Dave Thomas). San Roque Club with two championship layouts is also close by.

30 km NE of Algeciras
Coming from Malaga / Estepona leave the AP-7 (E15) at exit 130 / 131 (Guardiaro / Valderrama). At roundabout follow the road back under the motorway, direction Estepona / Malaga / Centro Commercial. At next roundabout on south side of motorway, turn right direction Sotogrande Alto. After o.8 km at roundabout turn right direction Valderrama. After o.1 km go through security gate. After 4.2 km turn left into Almenara Golf & Hotel.

Almenara Golf Hotel & Spa: In terms of elevation there is a distinct similarity between the three excellent nine-hole loops here at Almenara. Whether you are on Los Lagos (Lakes), Los Pinos (Pines) or Los Alcornoques (Cork Oaks) you will start out playing a couple of downhill holes, hit a flatter middle section, before commencing quite serious climbs back up to the clubhouse.
Excellent maintenance, not overly wide fairways and fast, slick greens are also common. The Los Pinos loop feels the tightest, with trees and bushes lining many of the fairways. Los Lagos, as the name implies, has several water hazards very much in play, particularly in its middle section, as does Los Alconorques.
All three nines are excellent in their own right, but our favourite is Los Alcornoques, which has some of the most dramatic holes, not least its two plunging downhill par-3's. Throughout, there are wonderful views from the course; sometimes natural countryside, other times largish villas and occasionally the Mediterranean.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: men 28; women 36.
Soft spikes only. Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.

From its hillside location the hotel offers wonderful views across the course, and down across Sotogrande to the Mediterranean in the distance. Estepona
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.

Here at Prince’s Golf Club you'll find 27 excellent holes of links golf. Just over the fence and sharing similar terrain is Royal St George’s; but Prince’s is far from overshadowed by its venerable neighbour. The three nine-hole loops at Prince's, laid out over gently undulating terrain, are sure to bring a smile of satisfaction to all lovers of links golf.
