La Canada
La Cañada Golf Club is located in the heart of the Costa del Sol, within the Sotogrande Estate (or Urbanisation). Close by are its hi-end and rather exclusive Sotogrande neighbours, including Valderrama, La Reserva, Royal Sotogrande, and The Alto Club. Established as the Estate's easier access "municipal" golf course, La Cañada enjoys much favour with local golfers and visitors alike.
Here at La Cañada you'll find plenty of variety in a layout that combines holes created by the great Robert Trent Jones Sr, and a second-nine added by Dave Thomas. Arguably the best hole is the short par-4 18th where an intimidating tee shot over a large ravine (La Cañada) is complemented by impressive views down to the Guadiaro River and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.
Good
La Cañada lies within the bounds of the renowned Sotogrande Estate (or Urbanisation). Founded in 1962, Sotogrande grew from the vision of Joseph McMicking, a Filipino-American entrepreneur and former president of the Philippines-based Ayala Corporation. Upon retiring from Ayala in 1960, and inspired by The Forbes luxury resort in the Philippines, as well as Pebble Beach in California, McMicking set about establishing a hi-end luxury resort on the Mediterranean coast in Spain.
Helped by his cousin Freddy Melian, and nephews Jaime and Enrique Zobel, McMicking settled on a property called Finca Paniagua in San Roque, close to Gibraltar. On this 1800 hectare site, the exclusive resort and community of Sotogrande was established.
The Sotogrande Estate is home to several exclusive hi-end golf courses, notably Valderrama, Real Sotogrande, La Reserva and The Alto Club. Also within the Estate, La Cañada was developed in 1982 to provide a "municipal" golf facility, more accessible to local golfers than its lofty neighbours. Just outside the Estate, the San Roque club was established in 1991, also with a course designed by Dave Thomas.
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
