Real (Royal) Club de Golf Guadalmina

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1959

Real Club de Golf Guadalmina: Real (in English, Royal) Guadalmina is home to two championship 18-hole courses and a 9-hole short course.

The South (or Sur) course is the second oldest layout on the Costa del Sol, arriving a mere 34 years after the first - Real Club de Campo de Málaga. The South was designed by Javier Arana in 1959, and is renowned for its difficulty, making it more suitable for experienced players.

Most of this excellently maintained layout is played through undulating, tree-lined fairways with plenty of villas tucked-in behind the trees. The fairways are generally quite narrow, and well protected by the tree-line, which puts a premium on straight driving.

The course is almost unique on the Costa, in terms of getting you down to the sea and overlooking the beach. This seaside "experience" is brief, but includes the memorable par-3 11th hole, with its huge bunker down the left-handside - almost as much sand as on the beach itself. With little rough to speak of, it will be the tightish fairways, excellent greens and brief seaside experience that will command your attention on the South.

Guadalmina North (Norte) was designed by Folco Nardi in 1973. This course runs almost parallel to its southern “brother,” and is shorter, more undlating and more wooded than the South course. The layout requires straight driving if you are to stay out of the numerous water hazards.

Real Guadalmina is the second oldest golf course on the Costa del Sol; Real Club de Campo de Malaga is the oldest. | King Juan Carlos I conferred the Real (Royal) prefix on Guadalmina GC in 2008. By royal prerogative, at least 18 Spanish golf clubs can now use the "Royal" title, including: Bendinat, El Prat, Guadalmina, La Herreria, Las Brisas, Las Palmas, Malaga, Neguri, New San Sebastian (Basozabal), Pedrena, Puerta de Hierro, R.A.C.E. (Jarama), San Sebastian, Seville, Sociedad Hipica Espanola, Sotogrande, Tenerife and Valderrama. At least two other clubs once carried the Royal title: Royal Menorca (now closed) and Royal Deportivo Las Lomas-El Bosque, now called GC Lomas-Bosque.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
