85 km NE of Almeria.
Heading north-east from Almeria on the A7-E15 motorway, take exit 529 (Vera). At roundabout after exit ramp take the first exit, direction "via de servicio" (do not take direction Vera or go back onto the A7). After 100 metres at second roundabout, follow direction Club de Campo Valle del Este. After 1.1 km turn left into Valle del Este Golf & Hotel, and follow signs.
Valle del Este Golf Resort: Often described as "golfing in the desert", Valle del Este is first and foremost a resort, with an excellent and very comfortable four-star hotel and many holiday apartment blocks. Added to the resort is a rather tight and technical, not overly long golf course, where the front-nine weaves its way around the real estate.
Thankfully the back-nine is much stronger, has less intrusive housing around the holes and brings into play the attractive dry river bed of the Nuno River. In golfing terms the course requires you to hit straight but not necessarily long; there is little comfort or safety beyond the generally narrow fairways and light rough - deep ravines as well as thick bushes and scrub often lie in wait for anything too wayward.
Water hazards also make an occasional appearance, not least at the short par-4 5th hole, where the fairway has been split in two - one half a sliver of short-cut grass, the other a small lake ! Who said golf course designers weren't sadists ! When the housing is not in front of you there are pleasant views onto the surrounding countryside - dry and rugged hills and higher mountains farther afield.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: 36.
Soft spikes only. Players generally walk this course. Golf carts (fitted with GPS) available for hire.

Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).
Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
