Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1889

Nuwara Eliya Golf Club was founded in 1889, in what had become a popular holiday retreat and health resort for British colonial families in Ceylon. Here amongst the beautiful tea country hills of central Sri Lanka, you'll find one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia.

To this day Nuwara Eliya caters to some of the customs and traditions of the country’s colonial past. A quaint mixture of old-world charm and modern trappings invests the area, and the relatively tight, tree-lined golf course, with a special aura, providing the essence of its attractiveness.

Did you know?

Nuwara Eliya is a city in the tea country hills of central Sri Lanka. It was founded by Samuel Baker, the explorer who also "discovered" Africa's seventh largest lake in 1846, and named it Lake Albert in the process.

Nuwara Eliya, with its cooler climate, became the main sanctuary for British civil servants and planters in Ceylon. Called Little England, the British colonialists immersed themselves in their favourite pastimes of hunting (deer, fox, elephant, and probably anything else that moved), and chasing spherical objects ... around polo fields, golf courses and cricket pitches.

Nowadays, there is much to do and see in Nuwara Eilya: the Hakgala Botanical Gardens displays roses and tree ferns, and shelters monkeys and blue magpies; nearby Seetha Amman Temple is a colourful Hindu shrine, and densely forested Galway's Land National Park is a sanctuary for many exotic bird species.
