Ullna
Ullna Golf Club re-opened in June 2013 following an extensive Jack Nicklaus-designed renovation. With its stunning lakeside setting and stylish Nicklaus redesign, the course quickly resumed its place as one of Sweden's best. Many would also add that in terms of aesthetics it is the country's most beautiful course. Quite possibly.
Sitting next to the delightful Ullnasjon (Lake Ullna), nearly half the holes are played directly along the lakeshore, with many of the greens jutting precociously out into the lake. Even the proximity of a major road, running close to a few holes on the back-nine, doesn't detract from the overall beauty and challenge of this renowned Stockholm golf course.
Whether in the form of the lake itself, or smaller ponds and fairway-crossing ditches, water threatens on all but a handful of holes. There is no escaping water here at Ullna. Adding to Ullna's impressive defences and top tournament credentials an abundance of stylish bunkering, complete with Augusta-style white glistening sand, constantly threatens. As and when you've navigated past the daunting array of water and sand hazards, large fast sloping greens await.
After a relatively benign opening par-5 and then a short par-4, the fun really starts at the perilous downhill par-3 3rd, with water surrounding the green. Next up is a risk-reward par-5, one of many majestic lakeside holes that offers a beautiful lake view, as well as the opportunity to put an early big number on your scorecard.
