The Canyon course at Blue Canyon Country Club has always oozed a certain style and elegance. From lowly origins as an open cast tin mine, it rose to high-office as the top professional tournament venue in Thailand. The layout no longer wins quite as many accolades as in its heyday, but it still edges its sibling, the also notoriously challenging Lakes course.
The Canyon course represents more than just challenging golf. Laid out over pleasantly undulating terrain, this wonderfully picturesque layout was the standard bearer for golf in Thailand for many years .. three Johnnie Walker Classics and the "Canyon-hole" made sure of that.
On the Canyon's front-nine, water is not your greatest challenge, as much as tight drives through avenues of mature trees. Substantive bunkering also lurks along the fairways and around the large and subtly sloping greens. Water puts in its first telling appearance as you approach the 9th green, an excellent risk-reward par-5. The water level then starts to crank-up at the long par-5 11th and par-4 12th holes.
At the signature "Canyon" hole, the par-4 13th, you must commit to a risky drive over water and clear a 30-foot canyon face on the other side. Tournament professionals invariably try to drive the green, dispensing with a wide dog-legging landing area that provides a safer route for mere mortals. You can negotiate with your caddie how much of the canyon to bite off.
The closing stretch of the back-nine remains on the boil after the "Canyon" hole. At the plunging downhill island-green par-3 14th you may feel the target is the skinniest island green you've ever played to. The elegantly dog-legging short par-4 16th is a gem, and the par-3 17th played across water is also top class ... and long! The resplendent clubhouse and jungle-clad hills provide a perfect backdrop to close out your round at the short, but testing par-4 18th.

The Canyon course shot to fame when it was selected for the 1994 Johnnie Walker Classic (won by Greg Norman). Four years later it was Tiger Woods who emerged triumphant at Blue Canyon to take the same trophy. The Canyon course has hosted many other top level competitions, most recently in 2021 (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Blue Canyon).

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
