RTJ Golf Trail: Oxmoor Valley (Valley course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1992

RTJ Golf Trail - Oxmoor Valley (Valley course): Here at Oxmoor Valley on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, 36-holes of sumptuous championship golf await, but you'll have to decide for yourself if you prefer the more classical Valley course or the thrills-and-spills of the roller-coaster Ridge course.

The Valley is an out-and-back layout that starts with a plunging descent down to the Shannon valley floor, via an excellent, slightly dog-legging par-4 and a fiercely bunkered par-3. Thereafter much of the course is played in the valley, with pleasant undulations in the terrain, although never anything too excessive.

Many of Trent Jones' classic design features are to found here. Several elevated tee-boxes allow a good view onto the not overly wide fairways. Stylish fairway bunkering and occasional small greenside pot bunkers are plentiful, while the slopes and borrows on the nicely elevated greens will thoroughly test your skills with the short stick.

Water is a real threat on about half the holes, where either a small lake hugs the fairway or protects the green (as at the excellent par-5 12th), or a meandering creek wanders across the fairway, which is the case at the equally good par-5 9th.

With no real estate around the course, the Valley offers a great opportunity to immerse yourself in a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging layout, while journeying through this pleasantly wooded, creekside setting. The 18th brings you back to the clubhouse, with some picturesque views onto neighbouring woods and hills.

Did you know?

Little Shades Creek (in the Shannon Valley) is the name of the creek that runs through the Valley course.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a unique collection of eleven excellent golf venues spread through the State of Alabama. Dr. David Bronner, the then CEO of the organisation that ran the Alabama state-employees pension funds, originally conceived the idea of the Trail. Bronner was convinced that creating a top-quality golf trail would attract golfers from near and far, raise Alabama's profile and at the same time earn a good return for the pension fund monies invested in the project - the world's largest golf course building project ever undertaken.

The original courses on the Trail (located at Hampton Cove, Silver Lakes, Oxmoor Valley, Capitol Hill, Grand National, Cambrian Ridge, Magnolia Grove, and Highland Oaks) were all designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened for play in 1992. Lakewood GC at Point Clear was acquired along with the Grand Hotel; its two golf courses were recently renovated and included in the Trail. Although not designed by Trent Jones, The Shoals and Ross Bridge were added to the Trail in more recent years.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
