Lookout Mountain, AZ
Located alongside the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, the Pointe Golf Club on Lookout Mountain, also known as Lookout Mountain Golf Club, is another in Phoenix' abundant collection of challenging and enjoyable desert-style courses. This out-and-back layout, with a stunning panorama of Phoenix to be enjoyed at the Owl's Nest (halfway house), blends desert-style golf with other more resort-style trappings.
Variety is one of Lookout's key attributes. Several holes are played across flatter terrain, while dramatic elevation changes also come into play on holes like the plunging par-4 10th. The properties found on some sections of the course perimeter, range from relatively modest to positively mansion-like.
At times tight and testing, at others more open and forgiving, the dramatic intensity of the layout builds as your round progresses, with many memorable holes gracing the back-nine in particular. Although not much in evidence on the front-nine, water makes some telling appearances on the back-nine, not least at the par-5 15th, par-3 16th and almost encircling the green at the par-5 18th.
With many beautiful mountain views and plenty of rocky hills and saguaro cactus lining the holes, Lookout Mountain provides a scenic starting point for any golfing visit to the Phoenix / Scottsdale area. At just over 6,500 yards from the back tees, it will also leave you with enough in reserve to take on some of the area's longer and more demanding layouts.
