Whirlwind Golf Club (Cattail course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2002

Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass boasts two top-quality championship layouts, almost identical twins, with only subtle differences between them. The Cattail is the longer of the two courses, and a fabulous test that stretches to over 7300 yards from the tips.

Although the surrounding terrain is essentially flat Sonoran desert, the fairways contain many pleasantly rolling undulations, which lead you to some of the finest greens in the Phoenix / Scottsdale area. Each of the skilfully designed holes gives you a clear idea of what's needed from the tee, although if you play short or get out of position a few blind shots may be required.

Water is not too frequent a hazard, but does put in some telling appearances, especially at two of the par-3s, at the excellent short par-4 5th (a terrific risk-reward hole for big hitters) and alongside most of the par-4 14th.

This excellently maintained out-and-back layout provides some wonderful views over the open desert terrain, across to the horses and cattle of Lone Butte Ranch, and away to distant mountain ridges beyond. Without any housing development in the area, the only building you'll pass is the Sheraton Resort hotel which puts in an appearance alongside the par-4 16th.

Although not overly dramatic, the layout's stylish bunkering, open desert character and attractive mountain scenery ensures an enjoyable and challenging round, with many fine holes along the way.

Did you know?

Whirlwind is located on part of the Gila River Indian Reservation, whose inhabitants were originally desert farmers, called Akimel O’othom. The Spanish gave them a name which is still used today, Pima.

These American Indian desert farmers were very skilled at creating irrigation systems for their crops, diverting the waters of the Gila River into canals. They were joined on this land by the Pee Posh (Maricopa) tribe.

The Gila River rises in western New Mexico and flows across Arizona, skirting the south of Phoenix, before joining into the Colorado River near Yuma. The Gila is one of the largest desert rivers in the world. In the past it, and its main tributary the Salt River, would both carry large volumes of water; however, irrigation and municipal water diversions have turned both into largely dry rivers.
